SSI Wreck Diver – What is it?

Many of the ocean’s best dive sites are wrecks. These impressive structures attract unusually high densities of marine life and give you the chance to immerse in living history as you dive. There is nothing quite like wreck diving and the SSI Wreck Diving specialty will give you all the skills and knowledge you need to become a safe and confident wreck diver.

With a combination of academic and confined water sessions, you will be taught how to safely conduct non-penetration dives around wrecks and artificial reefs, up to a depth of 30 meters. You will also get to practice your wreck diving skills during open water training dives. All of which will ensure you can enjoy wreck diving with confidence and get the most out of every dive. The course itself is broken down into 2 parts, the SSI Wreck Diver and the SSI Advanced Wreck Diver and the requirements of both of these courses are slightly different.

What will I learn?

Reviewing guidelines for researching and respecting wrecks
Safety considerations for navigating and exploring wrecks
Surveying and mapping a wreck
Using penetration lines and reels to guide exploration
Techniques to avoid kicking up silt or disturbing the wreck and its inhabitants.

What are the requirements?

• Minimum age – 10 years old for the Wreck Diver course, 15 for the Advanced Wreck Diver Course
• For the Wreck diver, you must be 10 and Open Water qualified to complete the course and complete 2 training dives in open water
• For the Advanced Wreck Diver – You will be a minimum of 15 years old, you must have 24 dives logged, and complete a dry land session followed by 2 further open water dives
